As a globally recognised financial centre with international outreach Luxembourg has positioned itself as a world leader in the sphere of digital financial services and a financial technology hub. Furthermore, it is emerging as a significant base for start-ups.

Emerging out of the international e-commerce and e-payments sector thanks to the presence of companies such as PayPal, Amazon and Rakuten, the Luxembourg fintech sector has diversified into an ecosystem engaged in RegTech, Security & Authentication, DLT & Smart Contracts, Mobile & e-payments, Automated Investment services, Big Data and Analytics.

A range of support initiatives make Luxembourg the ideal place to engage in a start-up.  Alongside a number of global venture capital and business angel investors, start-ups can combine private funding with public funding schemes for research, development and innovation. In addition, tech companies can obtain funding from the €150m Luxembourg Future Fund as well as the Digital Tech Fund. Meanwhile, incubator and accelerator facilities offer physical space designed to foster business development and provide invaluable networking opportunities.

The flagship initiative for FinTech is the LHoFT Foundation (Luxembourg House of Financial Technology). LHoFT is a public-private joint venture that drives technology innovation for Luxembourg’s financial services industry, connecting the domestic and international FinTech community to develop solutions that will shape the world of tomorrow.

Close collaboration with public research institutes, such as the Luxembourg University Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), encourage the development of innovative industry solutions.

Luxembourg’s European regulatory framework and the Europe-wide licensing of financial services provide security to both companies and investors. The financial regulator (CSSF) has a well-established reputation for accessibility, competence, responsiveness and an open attitude towards innovation.
